Trieste & Miramare Castle Escape

Trieste sits at the meeting point of Italian, Austrian and Slavic influence, and it shows in a city that feels quite unlike anywhere else in Italy. You'll take in one of Europe's largest sea-facing squares at Piazza Unità d'Italia, wander the little Canal Grande with its bridges and waterside cafés, and head just out of town to Miramare Castle, a fairy-tale white fortress perched right on the Adriatic, built for an Austrian archduke and still surrounded by manicured gardens running down to the sea.
